Accessing a neighbour’s building permit

Accessing a neighbour’s building permit

A neighbour building permit may help clarify works near your property. Before requesting access, identify the building and the documents you are looking for. Access depends on the procedure and its legal basis.

Where to request a neighbour building permit

Address the request to the authority that holds the file. A building address, parcel number and cadastral municipality help identify the case. Include the decision number if it is known.

Access to an administrative file and access to public information are different routes. The authority assesses the applicable conditions and any restrictions. A general request does not automatically provide access to every document.

Records do not replace the permit

The appearance of a neighbouring building does not establish what was approved. Nor does its existence mean the same construction can be repeated on your parcel. The planning conditions and circumstances of each project must be reviewed.

The cadastre records property information and physical characteristics. An entry is not, by itself, legalisation. The land register concerns rights and legal facts. Compare the records, permits, drawings and the actual condition.

Prepare a focused request

  • Identify the building or administrative case precisely.
  • List the documents you wish to inspect.
  • Explain the request and its relevant legal basis.
  • Provide supporting evidence where the procedure requires it.

The Slovenian source page includes an archived request example from 2022. Check any old template against your circumstances and the authority’s current requirements. A template cannot guarantee that access will be granted.

What this means for your project

A neighbour’s approval does not guarantee the same decision for your building. Legalisation elsewhere also does not remove restrictions on your land. Review access, setbacks and potential effects before developing the proposal.
